What is a “death file”, and why your family will be grateful for one

We build DedSafe, a secure UK online safe for families. We check our guides against GOV.UK and other official sources, and review each one every year.

A “death file” sounds gloomy, but it is one of the kindest things you can leave. It is simply one place where your family can find everything they’ll need if something happens to you.

What goes in it?

  • Where your will is kept, and who your executor is
  • Your bank, savings and pension details (not your passwords)
  • Insurance policies, including any funeral plan
  • Your household bills and who they are paid to
  • Your wishes for your funeral
  • People who should be told, and how to reach them
  • What you’d like done with your online accounts
  • A few words for the people you love, if you’d like to

Where should it be kept?

Somewhere safe, but somewhere your family can reach. A folder in a drawer works, as long as someone knows it’s there. Some people keep a copy with their solicitor.

Keep it up to date

Look through it once a year, perhaps on your birthday. Bank accounts, bills and wishes change, and an old file can send your family in the wrong direction.

It isn’t a will

A death file helps your family find things. It doesn’t replace a will, and it doesn’t give anyone legal permission to act for you. For that, you need a will and, while you’re alive, a Lasting Power of Attorney.
